I am writing with regret to let you know that Matti Salminen, who recently underwent surgery on his knee, has found that he requires more time than anticipated to recover and has therefore withdrawn from the role of King Marke for the first three performances of Tristan und Isolde, 29 September, 2 and 5 October 2009.
The role of King Marke will now be sung by John Tomlinson for the first three performances, marking his debut in the role at Covent Garden. He has previously sung King Marke at Bayreuth. His recent roles for The Royal Opera include the title role in the world premiere of The Minotaur, Gurnemanz (Parsifal) and Wotan/Wanderer (The Ring). His roles for The Royal Opera during the 2009/10 Season include Grand Inquisitor (Don Carlo) and General (The Gambler).
The rest of the cast remains unchanged, with Ben Heppner as Tristan, Nina Stemme as Isolde, Michael Volle as Kurwenal, Sophie Koch as Brangäne and with Antonio Pappano conducting.
As you have booked for one of the above dates, we are sorry for any disappointment that this change may have caused and hope you will join us in welcoming John Tomlinson alongside the rest of the wonderful cast.
