Decca has announced changes to its management and corporate structure, marking the end of the company’s long history as a British-based entity.

Universal Music Classics and Jazz, the parent company, has said that Decca will retain its individual identity as an imprint. However, its back-office functions – including marketing and promotion – will now be shared with Deutsche Grammophon. This new division, called Deutsche Grammophon Decca (DGD), will be based in Hamburg.

The A&R at Decca – whose artists include Cecilia Bartoli, Riccardo Chailly, Julia Fischer and Renée Fleming, and whose back-catalogue includes recordings by Luciano Pavarotti, Dame Joan Sutherland and Sir Georg Solti – will now be led by the new general manager, Paul Moseley. He will be based in London, along with what is described by Decca as “a small marketing and new media team to liaise with its DGD colleagues”. Decca’s current 20-plus staff is being reduced, by redundancy, to eight.

Moseley is a former Decca executive, though in 2005 founded Onyx Classics, which offers greater flexibility to artists in their relationship with the label – including the artist being able to retain the rights to the recording. Since its launch, it has provided something of a welcome refuge for artists who have found themselves without contracts with the majors (including a few from Decca itself!).

The Universal Classics and Jazz label, which focuses on cross-over repertoire, will now also be called Decca, but with different styling – employing the old black logo, as opposed to Decca's newer blue and red. Crossover activities are described as being “organisationally separate” from Decca’s core classical output.

Meanwhile, Matthew Cosgrove, formerly with Warner Classics and DG, joins Onyx Classics as general manager. He will run Onyx day-to-day replacing Moseley, though Moseley retains ownership of the company.
