Letra y traducción del pasaje.
Demons
Low born clods
Of brute earth,
They aspire
To became gods,
By a new bird,
And an extra grace,
And a score of merits,
As if aught
Could stand in place
Of the high thought,
And the glance of fire
Of the great spirits,
The powers blest;
The lords by right,
The primal owners,
Of the proud dwelling
And realm of light,
Dispossessed,
Aside thrust,
Chucked down,
By the sheer might
Of a despot´s will,
Of a tyrants frown,
Who after expelling
Their host, gave,
Triumphant still,
And still unjust,
Each forfeit crown
To psalm-droners,
And canting groaners,
To every slave,
And pious cheat,
And crawling knave,
Who licked the dust
Under his feet.
Ángel
It is the restless panting of their being;
Like beasts of pray, who, caged within their bars,
In a deep hideous purring have their life,
And an incessant pacing to and fro.
Demons
The mind bold
And independent,
The purpose free,
So we are told,
Must not think
To have the ascendant.
What´s a saint?
One whose breath
Doth the air taint
Before his death;
A bundle of bones,
Which fools adore,
When life is o´er.
Ha! Ha!
Virtue and vice,
A Knave´s pretence.
´Tis all the same,
Ha! Ha!
Dread of hell-fire,
Of the venomous flame,
A coward´s plea.
Give him his price,
Saint thought he be,
From shrewd good sense
He´ll slave for hire,
Ha! Ha!
And does but aspire
To the heaven above
With sordid aim
And not from love.
Ha! Ha!
Traducción
Los demonios
Simples terrones
De tierra bruta,
Aspiran
A ser dioses,
Naciendo de nuevo,
Y por especial misericordia
Y unos cuantos meritos,
Como si
Pudieran ocupar del lugar
Del pensamiento elevado,
Y de la mirada de fuego
De los grandes espíritus,
De los poderes bendecidos,
Los señores por derecho,
Los amos primordiales,
De la orgullosa morada
Y del reino de la luz,
Desposeidos,
Apartados,
Aventados,
Por el mero poder
De la voluntad de un déspota,
Del entrecejo de un tirano,
Que después de expulsar a sus anfitriones, da,
Triunfante aún,
Y aún injusto,
Cada confiscada corona
A cantores de salmodias
Y a mendigos plañideros,
A cada esclavo,
Y beato fullero,
Y truhán rastrero,
Que lame el polvo bajo sus pies.
El Ángel
Es el jadeo inquieto de su existencia;
Como bestias de presa que, enjauladas tras sus rejas,
En un profundo y horrible ronroneo pasan su vida,
Y en un ir y venir incesante.
Los Demonios
La mente audaz
E independiente,
La voluntad libre,
Según nos dicen,
No debe pensar
Que es superior.
¿Qué es un santo?
Alguien cuyo aliento
Mancilla el aire
Antes de su muerte;
Un montón de huesos,
Que los tontos adoran
Cuando vida ya no hay.
¡Ja, ja!
Virtud y vicio,
Pretensión de un truhán,
Es todo lo mismo;
¡Ja, ja!
Temor al fuego del infierno,
A la llama emponzoñada,
Excusas de un cobarde.
Dadle su precio,
Aunque sea santo,
Por su hábil sensatez
Será esclavo de alquiler;
¿Ja, ja!
Y aspira, si,
A los cielos,
Con sórdida intención,
Que no por amor.
¡Ja, ja!
