The rich colours and romantic exoticism of the 19th-century European image of Japan provide the ravishing backdrop for Moshe Leiser and Patrice Caurier's production of Puccini's perennial favourite.
But East clashes with West to dire effect as Cio-Cio-San, the young 'Butterfly' bride of the dashing American officer Lt B.F. Pinkerton, finds her romantic idyll shattered when he deserts her. Although she lives in hope of that 'one fine day' when he will return, increasing isolation and his final cruel revelation plunge her into tragic despair; the maid Suzuki and the American consul Sharpless can only look on, helpless.
The first of two separate casts is conducted by Daniel Oren, with Cristina Gallardo-Domas (Cio-Cio-San) and Marco Berti (Pinkerton) returning to this production, partnered by Christine Rice (Suzuki) and Zeljko Lucic (Sharpless) in his Royal Opera debut.
For the second cast, Philippe Auguin conducts again, with Marina Mescheriakova and Gwyn Hughes Jones in their House debuts as Cio-Cio-San and Pinkerton respectively, Stephanie Novacek (Suzuki) making a welcome Company debut and Royal Opera regular Thomas Allen (Sharpless) returning to a role he played last Season.
