Sapphic Ode
Roses from the dark hedge I plucked at night; They breathed sweeter fragrance than ever during the day; But the moving branches abundantly shed The dew that showered me.
Thus your kisses' fragrance enticed me as never before, As at night I plucked the flower of your lips: But you too, moved in spirit as they were, Shed a dew of tears.

Flow, my tears, fall from your springs! .............. ¡Fluid, lágrimas mías, caed de vuestros manantiales!
Exiled for ever, let me mourn; ........................... Exiliado por siempre dejadme penar.
Where night's black bird her sad infamy sings, ..... Donde el nocturno pájaro negro su triste infamia canta;
There let me live forlorn. ................................... Allí dejadme vivir desolado.
Down vain lights, shine you no more! ................. ¡Disipaos, luces vanas, no más resplandor!
No nights are dark enough for those ................... No hay noche suficientemente oscura
That in despair their lost fortunes deplore. ........... Para el que su perdido destino suspira;
Light doth but shame disclose. ............................
Never may my woes be relieved, ........................ Nunca sea aliviado mi tormento;
Since pity is fled; ............................................... Pues la lástima es rechazada.
And tears and sighs and groans my weary days .... Y lágrimas, y suspiros, y gemidos;
Of all joys have deprived. . .................................
From the highest spire of contentment .................. Desde la más alta torre del regocijo
My fortune is thrown; .......................................... Mi fortuna es arrojada.
And fear and grief and pain for my deserts ............ Y el miedo, y el dolor, y la pena espero por merecido;
Are my hopes, since hope is gone. ....................... Pues la esperanza se ha ido.
Hark! you shadows that in darkness dwell, ............ ¡Escuchad! Sombras que morad la oscuridad;
Learn to contemn light ......................................... Aprended a desdeñar la luz.
Happy, happy they that in hell ............................. ¡Felices, felices aquellos que en el infierno
Feel not the world's despite. ................................ No sienten los martirios terrenales!

"There's a Fairy that hides in the beautiful eyes Of the children who treat her well; In the little round hole where the eyeball lies She weaves her magical spell.
She is awfully tiny and shy to the sight, But her magic's past believing, For she fills you with light and with laughter, It's the spell of her own sweet weaving.
But! the eyes must be blue, And the heart must be true, And the child must be better than gold! And then if you'll let her, The quicker the better, She'll make you forget that you're old.
So if such a child you should chance to see, Or with such a child to play, No matter how tired or dull you be, Nor how many tons you weigh, You will suddenly find that you're young again,
And your movements light and airy, And you'll try to be solemn and stiff in vain - It's the Spell of the Blue-Eyes fairy!"
